Legends of Clal — Series Notes, Books 2–8
Built 2026-10-20 while Josh slept. A working notebook for the rest of the series, pulled from legends-log.md, illian-world-lite.md, the July 24 draft files, and everything decided in tonight's session.
Reminder from your own rule: Book 1 ships first. This file exists so nothing gets lost, not so you start writing Book 2. Park it here, then go back to "Early."
How to read the labels
- LOCKED — decided by you, recorded in
legends-log.md. - DRAFT — marked "locked" or "Josh's call" in the July 24 files (
open-questions-draft-answers.md,world-bible-comprehensive.md), but never recorded in the decision log. Confirm before treating as canon. - SEEDED — something Book 1 plants that a later book has to pay off.
- OPEN — a question nobody has answered yet.
- SUGGESTION — my idea, not canon. Use it, change it, or toss it.
Part 1 — The Series Spine (what everything else hangs on)
The dragon is the key (LOCKED)
- Every wielder knows the lore: once the great beast is summoned, the events written in the Book of Legends begin, all the way to the end of the world. The dragon is the trigger for the whole series.
- The three heroes (and the reader) don't learn this in Book 1. Morgrith knows the tradition, not the full stakes.
- Who first tells them the stakes is OPEN. Candidates you named: Gulnerye, someone else, or the RISHK themselves when they encounter the chamber.
The reveal ladder across the series (LOCKED, from tonight)
- Wielders exist, and they have a secret society (Book 1).
- The trio is called to find the dragon (Book 1).
- "The Dragon Summoner" is a person or a thing, unknown for a long stretch (Book 1, maybe into Book 2).
- The chosen one is revealed by the dragon alone, at the end of Book 1. The chosen one is the "captain of the wielders," their whole purpose.
- Summoning the dragon starts the end the Book of Legends foretells (later books).
Womlon's strategy (LOCKED)
- Defense: hunt and cut off every wielder, so no one can ever summon the great beast and start his downfall. That's what "The Robbing / The Taking" is for.
- Offense: get into the inner kingdoms to reach the dragon first, then destroy or control it. That's why the RISHK need Talon: unstained by banishment, he can cross the wards.
- The original banishment and the crystal theft are the same obsession. It's all about the dragon.
- Womlon says "the great beast" because he knows exactly how dangerous it is. His RISHK say "the filthy beast" because they don't.
The six and the three couples (LOCKED)
| Original triangle | Role across the series | Future spouse |
|---|---|---|
| Clal | The Dragon Summoner, the chosen one, captain of the wielders | Leara (seeded in the Book 2 Kelvkoroth arc) |
| Ansa | Her own full-weight role, OPEN (her own crystal, her wordless power, her "warrior's spirit") | Larkin or Skyla, OPEN |
| Rythe | Defeating the RISHK, which is really his own father's story ("Rythe with the assist") | Larkin or Skyla, OPEN |
- OPEN: Larkin's and Skyla's genders aren't recorded anywhere. That decides who pairs with whom.
- SEEDED: Book 1's last chapter shows six figures, three men and three women, around the white dragon (manuscript line 4712).
Rythe (LOCKED)
- He's a wielder by blood through Renthar, his secret father (Earth, Mirrim). Nobody, including Rythe, knows in Book 1.
- In Book 1 it genuinely could have been him. Morgrith suspects one of the two, Clal or Rythe, and doesn't know which.
- Book 1 conflict: Rythe resists Clal taking on the summoning. The reason is an unexplained power he can't name, with protectiveness for Clal underneath it.
- Book 6: Rythe must obtain the Mirrim crystal. He fights Renthar for it. Renthar knows Rythe is his son and lets him win. That recognition and sacrifice turns Renthar toward good before he dies. Clal would fail if he tried, by design.
- OPEN (element): if Rythe inherits earth from Renthar, he and Clal (also earth) share an element. That could deepen the "it could be either of us" doubt, or Rythe's element could differ.
Gulnerye's "next purpose" (LOCKED that it exists, OPEN what it is)
- Ch.1's dawn figure. He kept a 13-year promise to Dalbus. "I have been awakened" means that purpose is complete.
- SUGGESTION: Gulnerye is already the author of the Book of Legends (Book 1, Amnbir). His next purpose could be writing the rest of it, which ties straight into Book 7 being the in-world Book of Legends.
Part 2 — Book by Book
Book 2 — The Twisted Peak (Kelvkoroth, fire)
LOCKED - The first crystal, the Fire Crystal, is obtained here, not in Book 1. - Chapters 1–2: what happened to Rythe and Ansa behind their own door at Book 1's climax comes out. Clal keeps asking, and the plot keeps pulling him away from the answer. - Chapter 2: Larkin and Skyla arrive. - Leara joins. She's princess of Kelvkoroth. - Her father, the king, is genuinely greedy for the crystal. When Talon arrives (still captive), a secret sign, symbol or handoff tips the king off that a crystal theft is underway. He exploits it, pushes Talon aside, and turns against Clal's party. Talon doesn't realize he triggered it. - Climax: Clal fights Imforo. Leara helps with her fire because Clal, the budding hero, can't fully defend himself yet. Fighting side by side draws them together. - Talon's captivity: the RISHK use real coercive tactics (isolation, slow trust, guilt and duty, controlled information). On the page it stays in the warm classic-fantasy register, never named as a technique.
SEEDED in Book 1 - Talon captive, moved to Sagronof. - Willa, Goran, Turl, Gree and Mina at risk (Morgrith's warning, Book 1 Ch.10). Turl was told "you're their family now." - The coin with the wielder's symbol (Turl's) and Lyoria's matching emblem. - King Emesh of the Northern Realm is secretly allied with the RISHK. - The heart scale is outside the dragon, and Sedrak's one fatal spot is uncovered.
OPEN - The exact sign that tips off the king (left loose on purpose). - Is King Emesh connected to Kelvkoroth's king, or a separate villain? (Name check: the archive lists four kings: Emish, Fendaln, Neldier, Salfor. Neldeer is already the king at Eldan Vyum in Book 1.) - How and when Talon gets free. - What Rythe and Ansa's door actually showed them.
SUGGESTIONS - Rythe's door showed him something tied to earth or to a man's face he doesn't recognize (Renthar), with no explanation. That seeds Book 6 without tipping it. - Ansa's door showed her own role, the first real glimpse of what her part is, maybe her mother. - Larkin and Skyla's arrival could be tied to Gulnerye's next purpose. He sent Hittle to Ansa. Maybe he sends these two. - The scale as a liability: whoever holds the heart scale holds Sedrak's life. Womlon wanting it gives the RISHK a reason to hunt the twins specifically once they learn who has it.
Book 3 — Skyland's Rising (Edaphlas, air) (order with Book 4 may swap)
LOCKED - Edaphlas is the floating island, home of the Skylanders (Gulnerye's people) and Krothwing's home kingdom.
SEEDED in Book 1 - Morgrith's necklace stone is the Edaphlas crystal (once held by Renthar, retrieved by Morgrith, who still bears a scar). - Gulnerye's warning: "Krothwing... will try to take it from you." - The Skyland's Rising legend in the Book of Legends (an island lost to a storm long ago).
OPEN - Book 3 vs Book 4 order. - Krothwing's ending.
SUGGESTIONS - The DRAFT file argues the order sky (rise) → sands (fall, failure) → tides (depths, confrontation), which reads as a journey down into the self and back up. Worth considering. - Krothwing, the errand-runner who isn't fully committed, gets a crack of doubt in his home sky.
Book 4 — Sands of Illusion (order with Book 3 may swap)
LOCKED - No crystal is obtained. The book breaks the pattern on purpose and ends empty-handed.
OPEN - Location, villain and what the illusion is.
SUGGESTIONS - This is where the Clal/Rythe doubt from Book 1 can come back hardest. Failure invites "maybe it should have been me." - The DRAFT "Mirror Maiden" figure (see Part 4) fits a book of illusion.
Book 5 — Kingdom of the Tides (Illia, water — Womlon's domain)
LOCKED - The party splits: - Clal, Skyla, Rythe go back toward Sands of Illusion / Mirrim. - Leara, Ansa, Larkin go to the Kingdom of the Tides, where Womlon lives, bound to the water. - Rythe has to obtain a crystal here. The mechanics aren't worked out.
DRAFT (world bible): Womlon appears directly for the first time. Group B probably faces capture, setting up a Book 6 rescue.
OPEN - Do Group B enter willingly or get trapped? Does anyone stay behind? - How Womlon survives in water. Tabled ideas: he draws air from the water itself, or lives inside a water bubble. Your own 2022 notes mention "a continuous whirlpool that brings in the air he needs."
CONFLICT TO SETTLE: the world bible puts Rythe's fight with Renthar for the Mirrim crystal in Book 5 (with Renthar turning good only in Book 6). The decision log puts the fight, the recognition and the death together in Book 6. Both can't be true. See questions-for-josh.md.
Book 6 — Wielders of the Dawn
LOCKED - The great final battle. Hanone and Illia collide. - Renthar lets Rythe win the Mirrim crystal, turns good, and dies. - Book 1's climax mirrors Book 6's: elemental realms, the sea of glass, the song. - Womlon turns to ash and his fire burns across the earth. - The series' ending image: thousands of white dragons, like angels, carry each person to their new continent, and each becomes king or queen of their own world. - Hanone and Illia recombine into a single "glass world" that ushers in "the eternities."
OPEN, flagged since July: "Dawn" was dictated as (1) the sword of light forged from all five crystals and (2) the continents colliding. But your 2022 notes say the crystals carry no real power and no master weapon is ever forged. The July 23 crystal decision (inert to anyone chasing power, a voice for Illia to the worthy, one literal weaponized moment at the Book 6 union) mostly bridges this. Confirm the sword of light still happens.
SUGGESTION: The wielder's symbol has five points for five elements. When the five crystals unite, the symbol is "complete." The coin from Book 1's first chapter becomes a picture of the ending.
Book 7 — The Book of Legends
LOCKED - Not a conventional novel. It's the in-world book the characters carry through the whole series, published.
SEEDED in Book 1 - Gulnerye wrote the Book of Legends. - The scroll in the castle chest that "won't budge... meant for another day."
SUGGESTION: Gulnerye's "next purpose" is to finish it. The scroll that won't budge could be its missing final pages.
Book 8 — The Stone Seed
LOCKED - The origin story on Hanone: Ottomus, his queen, Felsawn, Womlon and Illia. The stone seed, the five elements added, Womlon's rebellion and banishment, Felsawn riding Sedrak to plant the seed. - Series bookend (Lindsay's call, adopted): Book 1 opens with the scale stone. Book 8 closes with a stone like the stone seed, the scale stone shows up again, and Clal's father receives it.
DRAFT: the stone seed takes 3 years: 1 to create and infuse, 2 to grow into the continent.
OPEN, and big: "Clal's father receives it at the end." Is Dalbus alive somewhere? If Book 8 is set on Hanone centuries earlier, how does Dalbus receive anything at its end? See the questions file.
Part 3 — Character Arcs Past Book 1
| Character | Locked | Open / Suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Clal | Dragon Summoner, chosen one, captain of the wielders. Inner fight against the "evil parts" of himself. Must one day kill someone he doesn't want to (a Nephi-style moment). Refusing his place costs lives. | Which book holds the Nephi moment? SUGGESTION: Imforo in Book 2 is too early; Book 5 or 6 hits harder. |
| Ansa | Gets the Nilthinon (light) crystal later, with a physical, wordless reaction. Air wielder. "Warrior's spirit." | Her full role. Her own door in Book 1. |
| Rythe | See Part 1. | His element. How much he resents or embraces not being "the one." |
| Leara | Princess of Kelvkoroth, fire wielder. Her father is greedy for the crystal. Marries Clal. | Her pull between her father and the party. |
| Larkin / Skyla | Arrive Book 2, Ch.2. Marry Ansa and Rythe. | Genders, powers and backgrounds. (DRAFT world bible: Larkin is "elf-like, sky/song," Skyla has "nature/flight" abilities. Unverified.) |
| Turl | Has always known the twins were adopted. Holds Willa's promise to Dalbus and guardianship. Carried the coin to Gwynn. | SUGGESTION: when the RISHK or the crown come for the family at Reubus, Turl is the one who stands between them. |
| Gree | Found and carved the dragon-stone without knowing. Never wields. | SUGGESTION: the waterfall on Crescent Keep where he found it is a hidden place worth returning to. |
| Mina | Wants to ride a white dragon someday ("Dreamfinder"). | SUGGESTION: Book 6's white-dragon exodus pays off Mina's wish. |
| Willa / Goran | Kept Dalbus's instructions. Broke the promise a year early. Don't know Clal is the chosen one. | Their fate in Reubus. |
| Dalbus / Nareete | Clal and Ansa's birth parents. Dalbus carries the chosen bloodline. Sedrak knew Dalbus. | Alive or dead? Where? How Sedrak's heart scale reached them. |
| Gwynn | Wielder, member of the wielder society, knew Nareete, thrilled to find "kin." On the RISHK list. | Survives? |
| Lyoria | The wielder society, the emblem. | Her rank in the society. |
| Gulnerye | Longkept (likely). Author of the Book of Legends. The dawn figure. | His next purpose. |
| Morgrith / Morgreth | Felsawn's son, Longkept, the guide. Suspects Clal or Rythe. | The spelling (both appear). Why he doesn't know the full stakes. |
| Talon | Most powerful wielder, unstained by banishment, captive, the RISHK's way in. Forged the sword 44 years ago. | DRAFT suggestion: he breaks free on his own in Book 2, with a guilt-and-redemption arc. |
| Sedrak | Ice dragon, white, immortal by nature, angel-coded. Gave up his heart scale and exposed his fatal spot. Felt the crack. | Who knows about the exposed spot? |
| Renthar | RISHK leader, Earth, Mirrim, Rythe's father. Redeemed and dies in Book 6. | |
| Imforo | Fire, Kelvkoroth. Clal fights him in Book 2. | DRAFT: dies, no redemption. |
| Skeldruc | Light, Nilthinon. The one who pushes back. | Redemption or death? |
| Krothwing | Air, Edaphlas. The errand-runner. | Redemption or death? |
| Womlon | Hanone-Thaine, "conqueror of Hanone." Bound to the sea. Says "the great beast." | How he survives in water. |
| Hittle | Gulnerye's sparrow, sent to Ansa. Sings the prophecy. | |
| King Emesh | Northern Realm, secretly allied with the RISHK. His queen died after hinting at a secret. | The queen's secret. SUGGESTION: it was about the wielders, or about Leara's family. |
Part 4 — Threads Book 1 Plants That Need Payoff
| Thread | Where in Book 1 | Status |
|---|---|---|
| The fire-people vision (two flames tossing a growing ball of light until it consumes them) | Fireside | OPEN. SUGGESTION: Womlon and Felsawn, or the two continents colliding (Book 6). |
| The woman's face in the river over Clal's shoulder | Fireside, recalled in "Voices" | OPEN. SUGGESTION: Illia herself, the spirit of the land. That links to the DRAFT "Lady" figures below. |
| Ansa's dream: a red fire snake among stone animals (eagle, giant turtle, dolphins forming an arch), broken chains | "Advantis Begins" | OPEN. The fire snake could be Imforo or Kelvkoroth (Book 2), the arch the Tides (Book 5). |
| The glowing river that saved Rythe ("the keeper of the light in the river") | Rythe's story | OPEN. Connects to the woman's face? |
| The sixth bell that doesn't ring | "Ansa At the Shop" | OPEN |
| The scroll that won't budge | The Hero's Chamber chest | OPEN. See Book 7. |
| Six figures around the white dragon | Final chapter | LOCKED as the six and the couples. |
| Rythe and Ansa's own door | The climax | LOCKED to reveal in Book 2, Ch.1–2. |
| Talon captive | Throughout | LOCKED as a Book 2 thread. |
| The family at risk in Reubus | Ch.10 | OPEN |
| The wielders list, names crossed out in blood | "The Forbidden Lair" | Some wielders are already dead. Who? |
| Mina's white figure, "whoever you are" | Fireside | SUGGESTION: comes back when Clal learns who he is. |
| The heart scale outside the dragon | Ch.1–climax | OPEN: what it does, and who wants it. |
| The coin and the wielder symbol | Ch.1 (Turl), Lyoria, the chest | LOCKED to be explained later as the wielder's symbol. |
| Death-themed portal with three doors (possibly Amnbir) | Floated July 23 | OPEN, series-level. |
| Wielder spell phrases ("terms and matrix") | Floated July 23 | OPEN. You believe the document exists somewhere. Searched tonight; see the old-notes report. |
The "Lady" figures (DRAFT, from the archive's "Character Thought Dump")
Each book's ending may include a feminine figure showing Clal where Womlon is weak: Lady Wind (voice on the wind), Lady of the Pool (a pool beneath a mountain), Mirror Maiden (a reflection). SUGGESTION: these are all Illia speaking through nature, and the woman's face in the river in Book 1 is the first one.
Part 5 — Suggestion Bank (ideas only, none of this is canon)
- The heart scale has a cost to keep. Carrying a piece of a dragon's heart might do something to the carrier, a slow pull. That ties to Clal fighting the "evil parts" of himself.
- Willa's half of the stone. The two halves of the dragon-stone could be meant to go back together, maybe at Book 8's bookend.
- Turl's coin is a passport. Other wielders recognize it, which gives Turl, a non-wielder, a strange standing with the wielder society.
- The Examinations' history. If the tradition was always a search for a dragon summoner, the old champions in the statue ("Seldinolum and his brave companions") could be earlier attempts that failed.
- Rythe's resentment turns into his strength. "It could have been me" becomes "I'm the one who can face the RISHK," and that's exactly where his father is waiting.
- The great beast and the filthy beast. One RISHK member who starts saying "great beast" instead of "filthy beast" shows he's starting to turn. Skeldruc fits.
- Gree's waterfall. The place on Crescent Keep where the dragon-stone was hidden could be one of Sedrak's old resting places. That explains why it was there at all.
- Dalbus and Sedrak. How Dalbus earned a dragon's heart scale could be its own legend inside the Book of Legends, read aloud in a later book.
Part 6 — Added After the Old-Notes Pass (same night)
Full detail and sources in old-notes-findings.md. Decisions waiting on you are in questions-for-josh.md. Everything below is from your own archive, but none of it is canon until you confirm it.
- The spell words are found (
EIGHT BOOKS 4.0): somon (call), morpho (command), thrysta (curse), and pyros, aqueos, aeros, geos, lumos, each with hand gestures. Book 2 is where they first get used: Clal calls a fire-door with "somon pyros" and it works on the fifth try, when he thinks of everyone standing with him. (Q1) - Couples evidence: your notes have Skyla flirting with Rythe and Ansa "noticing Larkin for the first time." Larkin is a male elf. Skyla is his twin sister. Both are from Edaphlas, and both fly. (Q13)
- Old conflict: "Larkin was never meant to marry. He dies... They return through the Arches." (Q12)
- The Arches of Amnbr: three doorways. After the continents collide, Ottomus, Felsawn and Morgreth come through them, and so do characters who died. That's your July "death portal." It's a Book 6 / Book 8 payoff.
- The parents may be alive, "locked in" an inner kingdom since the Wielder War (from the Neleen thread). That answers how Clal's father receives the stone at the end of Book 8. (Q10)
- Sedrak "should die in the end to seal his mission with his blood." His exposed heart, from giving up the heart scale, is how that could happen. Womlon has "cracked the code" of the magic in Clal's veins.
- Mother Earth / Illia is one woman wearing four faces (Lady Wind, Lady of the Pool, the Mirror Maiden, the Fair Flame of Nilthinon). She "bursts from the heart of the land" at the end. Book 5 reveals there's only one. (Q27)
- The Book of Legends has a voice (Illia) and a sealed portion that opens in Book 5. (Q28)
- Rythe's dagger is Renthar's: the mark of his lineage, azure light stone in the blade, the thing that "helps win [Renthar] back to the Light Side." It's already in Book 1. (Q23)
- Elnycula the Sage gives the six their gifts: an azure stone for Ansa, the dagger for Rythe, a calling horn for Larkin, a flute for Skyla, and white sand from the eastern shore for Leara, the only sand that came from Hanone.
- King Fendaln (elf king of the South, the Wooded Kingdom) and King Emish (from the North, secretly aiding the RISHK) are ready-made for Book 2. Other old names: N. King Blorien and Queen Lisreetha, E. Queen Othransa, S. King Narin, Mirrim's King Daxius, Kelvkoroth's Princess Rinica (older than Leara).
- The sword is "The Sun." "Who only can unlock the Sun." In older notes it's forged in the statue from the five elements, and the blue "New Sun" rises at the dawning.
- End-times signs in the four corners: the Four Waters fountain reverses, the Eastern Edges forest shrinks back into seeds, Skyland and the Moved Mountain return home, and the continent sails east. (Book 6)
- A RISHK member may travel with Clal undercover, Snape-style, and turn on Womlon in the end. (Book 3–5 option)
- Womlon's boyhood journal: he stole toward his father's stone and struck at 17. A mirror for Clal's 17. (Q26)
- "The Legends of Clal" as a title idea: "All legends are really false on Cul... by Clal's powers the pathway to each Legend is uncovered and unlocked." Every book proves one legend real.
